Plot summary
Sam is ten years old and the eldest child in her family. She often has to help her single mother care for her younger siblings when her mother does not cope.
Sam explains her complicated family tree and the family’s history, describes her noisy neighbourhood, and presents glimpses into her mother’s troubles.
Throughout her story, she tells of moments of peace and happiness by the river, playing with her siblings, being loved by her parents and grandparents, liking her supportive teacher, and being close to her dog, Mud Guts.
Sam’s story reflects a life with many ups and downs. The bad moments lose their power as she demonstrates resilience within a loving family.
